There is nothing wrong with networking with passive talent but as a recruiter you have stiff targets on your head and you have to work out who is actually interested in a job and who is a tyre kicker. This isnt about suitability, we assume these candidates can do the job, this is a matter of seeing who will actually go through with shifting jobs. I was asked what questions to ask candidates to rule them in or out for jobs and had to  rack my old recruiter brain. I came up with a few questions we used to ask candidates, here are some of them. If you can think of more, let me know in the comments below! Current job What made you move to your current position? Are you happy with your choice? How is the company doing? Have you achieved the goals that you set out in this job? Is there any further room for growth in this role? What would you like to do less/more of? (Candidate might mention more people management or money, less travel and programming for instance) Internal progression Are there internal promotion opportunities? (Try to map out the hierarchy) Have others around you moved up in the organisation? (Or are they stuck/have they left) Have you spoken to your manager or applied for internal roles? Do they know you are not happy with your current role? Why would you look at a job at another company when you havent explored internal opportunities first? (Counter offer risk here!) New jobs at other companies Have you had a look at new positions? Did you apply for any new positions? Have you had any feedback / interview / offers? What did you learn from these? (Candidate typically learns what they dont want to do from speaking to other candidates) People that leave your company typically go to? Timescales When would you ideally start a new role? Fight the good fight Often, recruiters will shrug their careworn shoulders and decide it’s a battle that requires too much hard work for such little return.  However,  sometimes (and I mean only sometimes), perseverance is key, especially if you are working in a specialised market and the PSL consists of the usual high street suspects (you know the ones). Your secret  weapon What you have (that they don’t) is specialised, expert industry knowledge.  Knowing your industry inside out can be invaluable in your quest for getting onto that fabled PSL, because when your client is desperately searching for a Senior Widget Firtler in Great Eccleston, it’s only a matter of time before you become the only missing piece to their puzzle. Get creative If your point of contact is in either HR or an in-house recruiter, then you’re most likely  on to a hiding to nothing. The only way in? Yes, its the  hiring manager; the person who has resigned themselves to the fact that Widget Firtlers of any persuasion do not exist in Great Eccleston. Once you  have their name, then Bingo! You can then carefully cultivate your way in. The hiring manager doesn’t care if you are on the PSL or not they care about the fact you have Dave Grinthorpe’s CV who lives near Great Eccleston and has been Widget Firtling for over 10 years. The hiring manager has just become your greatest ally. Your new ally Said new  ally will try to make sure  HR acknowledges the fact you have given him the perfect CV theyll likely pass on that he wants to interview Dave immediately. You see, the hiring manager just wants to fill the void left by Frank, who was poached by their rival company down the road in Hambleton. This hiring manager will speak to their boss, and tell them about you and how you have the perfect candidate for them!  The chain reaction will be that dave finally gets an interview, and HR gets the hump with you.   Burning bridges or building them? The in-house recruiter and HR will be overjoyed that you spoke directly to the manager (cough, cough). NOT and theyll call you to let you know. Your new ally, aka hiring manager wont really care that youve ruffled some feathers; they only care about the fact that youve given them Dave.  Now, you might be thinking about burnt bridges with HR etc, but the fact of the matter is that you have found a way in! Most of the time, even if your candidate gets the role, you will be told its  a one off and the PSL still stands. However, you have already started a long process of breaking down barriers. Congratulations! Proof is in your pudding The hiring manager (not to mention  HR) now knows you can deliver and they  will likely let other managers know too  and pretty soon, when the PSL is up for review, you will be recommended! Of course, this isn’t always the case and sometimes after  the initial first placement is made, HR will make it their sole purpose to keep you from ever dealing with them ever again because of your disregard for their policies, but the more specialist you are, the less likely it is theyll be able to afford ignoring  you. While information has become more digitalized, it's important that we look at books as a way of preserving our history. They speak truths and facts that sometimes the internet cannot provide. We need people who are willing to preserve this information. 3. How do you see a library assistant being successful? By looking at the overall operations of the library and seeing that we are performing them with the best of success. That means we don’t see books stacked high that is not organized, that means we have room for our community to gather and read books and that means we have a fruitful amount of books that are ready to be checked out. 4. What are some ways a library assistant can fail? By not being reliable. Not showing up for work or not being passionate about the work we are doing is a few ways the assistant can fail. Without that, the tasks that are performed regularly will become tiresome and that will impact our community and our library. 5. How would you encourage the passion of books to develop amongst younger generations? By holding readings or some type of community project which the younger generations can gather and learn why books are important to our past, our present and our future. Without explicitly describing it, we may lose the passion that could potentially develop. We have to show younger generations why they should be passionate, not just tell them.
